Chief Executive Officer Announcement

The Board of Directors of the Sydney and Area Chamber of Commerce has appointed Kathleen Yurchesyn as the Chamber’s new Chief Executive Officer.

“We are excited to have Ms. Yurchesyn lead our Chamber,” says Ian Parker, Chair of the Board, “As a progressive and strategic thinker we are confident she will grow the Chamber as the voice of the private sector.” Parker adds, “This is an exciting time for the business community here in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. There is an energy and optimism that we are moving in the right direction. I know under Ms. Yurchesyn’s leadership the Chamber will continue to play an instrumental role as we move forward.”

Kathleen Yurchesyn achieved her Bachelor of Public Relations from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. In her most recent role of Marketing Manager with the Marketing and Communications Department at Cape Breton University she has helped raise the profile of the university not only locally, but nationally and internationally as well. Having grown up in Cape Breton, she says she is passionate about the community and giving back. She has worked with and volunteered with numerous community groups and organizations, assisting them with their marketing and communications strategies. Yurchesyn has held board positions with Transition House Foundation and with the Coxheath Hills Wilderness Trail.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to add value to our members while promoting business growth within the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.” Yurchesyn says. “I am confident that through collaboration with the Board and input from our membership, we can chart a new strategy to move forward and support the needs of our membership and the businesses we serve.” Yurchesyn adds, “I believe that our communities are at a pivotal point right now, with both our vibrant young entrepreneurs and established business leaders seeking engagement and connectivity. I am looking forward to providing more innovative ways to create these experiences for our current and future members.”

Yurchesyn officially takes over the CEO position with the Chamber on Tuesday, April 3.

The Sydney and Area Chamber of Commerce serves a membership of just over 300, representing 12,000 employees within the CBRM, making it the third largest Chamber in Nova Scotia. The Chamber continues to act as an advocate for local business, and the progressive development of our local economy.
