WestJet flights between Halifax and Sydney took off little more than a year ago but the airline is already planning to double the number of those flights to two per day.

Business people in Sydney are seeing that as a vote of confidence in the local economy.

“WestJet has been looking to establish a stronger base in Atlantic Canada, hopefully Halifax, and we have been following that because it will give us more access to points east,” says Adrian White, executive director of the Sydney and Area Chamber of Commerce.

According to White, Air Canada quickly lowered its fares when WestJet first began regular service between Halifax and Sydney.

“When WestJet started . . . last July, you could see Air Canada fares drop markedly to compete,” he says.

The result has been a boom in the number of business people choosing to fly rather than drive between the two municipalities.
